Active solids exhibit anomalous elasticity due to their far-from-equilibrium nature. These materials are composed of particles that consume energy and transform it into mechanical work. I will focus on novel phenomena and design principles for active materials with so-called odd elastic moduli, which are composed of non-reciprocal springs. For example, our recent work has shown that making individual active components stronger can make the global odd moduli weaker, leading to the counter-intuitive principle that more is less [1]. These results point to the design of novel soft machines at the macroscale, and guide the miniaturization of non-reciprocal metamaterials to the colloidal scale.
