Candra Adi Wiguna, Yifei Cai, LIM Li Sing Sarah Lilian, Jihad Furqani, Assitant Professor Yusuke Fujii, Associate Professor Kyohei Kiyota, and Professor Akira Chiba in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Institute of Science Tokyo, has been awarded the 2024 First Paper Award from IEEE Open Journal of Industry Applications for outstanding research on vibration and acoustic noise reduction in switched reluctance motors (SRMs). The award ceremony took place in IEEE Energy Conversion Congress & Expo in October 2024.
The winning paper, “Vibration and Acoustic Noise Reduction in Switched Reluctance Motor by Selective Radial Force Harmonics Reduction”, presents a novel approach to mitigating noise and vibration in SRMs by selectively reducing specific radial force harmonics. This method significantly improves motor performance, achieving a 7.1 dBA reduction in overall sound pressure level while maintaining efficiency.
Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Wiguna said, "High acoustic noise has long been a challenge for SRMs, especially in applications such as electric vehicles and industrial machinery. This research provides an effective solution that enhances motor performance while improving user comfort."
The research was conducted in collaboration with fellow researchers and students at Institute of Science Tokyo (former Tokyo Institute of Technology), and it builds on years of dedicated study in motor noise reduction. Dr. Wiguna expressed gratitude to colleagues, mentors, and family for their support throughout the research journey.
This recognition underscores the impact of Institute of Science Tokyo’s contributions to cutting-edge engineering research. The findings are expected to benefit industries where noise and vibration reduction are critical, such as automotive, aerospace, and consumer appliances.
