Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering News
The fall graduation ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students was held at Tokyo Tech on September 25, 2020. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the university-wide ceremony was attended by one representative student from each department, as well as the university president, executive board members, and organizers. Held in the morning, the event was broadcasted live on social media.
To recognize all students who completed both undergraduate and graduate programs, diplomas and certificates of the rest of the students were conferred in the respective departments in the afternoon after the university-wide ceremony.
The Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering (TSE) held separate programs for the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Ishikawadai campus of Tokyo Tech. Both events were participated by faculty members of the department and family members of the recipients. Participation was also possible remotely.
Strict safety procedures were in place to prevent the spread of the virus, which included social distancing, wearing of masks, alcohol setup at the entrance, and concise programs. The undergraduate conferment was held only for 15 minutes, while the graduate level conferment lasted around 30 minutes. Despite the current restrictions, the event was solemn and inspiring owing to the speeches of Prof. Shinya Hanaoka, the department chair, and Prof. Tsuyoshi Kinouchi, the chair of the graduate program, “Global Engineering for Development, Environment and Society (GEDES)”.
The university’s efforts to adjust to the new normal, as with the recent graduation ceremony, evidently highlights the global need for more graduates capable of creating sustainable solutions and providing scientific breakthroughs to assist mankind in dealing with imminent complex issues. Upon completion, international undergraduates and masters will either pursue further graduate studies, join companies, or return to their home countries. To assist them, TSE also welcomes its alumni to its department alumni group (c/o Dr. Winarto Kurniawan).
University-wide graduation ceremonies are held biannually on the last weeks of March and September. In the year 2020, TSE has conferred 15 doctoral degrees, 49 masteral degrees, and 39 bachelor degrees.
