Electrical and Electronic Engineering News
Imagine a future world where automated buses and trucks lead the way, avatar robots manage nursing care, and automated tractors plow through an enormous field. Would you like to become a human resource who contributes to the realization of a Super Smart Society (SSS)?
In April 2020, the Tokyo Institute of Technology established the WISE-SSS program, a degree program that integrates master and doctoral courses. In this article, we will introduce 4 attractive benefits of the WISE-SSS program! At the end of the article, testimonials of many WISE-SSS students are posted, so please read this article until the end!
In the WISE-SSS Program, you can learn knowledge and technology of machine learning and quantum science, in addition to conventional electricity, machinery, and information engineering. For example, new types of classes are being offered as online lectures on cutting-edge technology and we can have discussions on Slack about them. The content of the lecture is not so tough to understand even for non-specialists, and it is also a great opportunity to learn a wide range of knowledge!
A maximum of 500,000 yen/year can be provided to master's students, and a maximum of 2 million yen/year can be provided to doctoral students. You have to pass the midterm review to receive the doctoral scholarship. In the midterm review, you will present how your research can contribute to the SSS. You have also a peer-review by SSS students, and you can get meaningful feedback. Therefore, you can challenge the midterm review without any worry!
When a research project with consortium partners is conducted, a budget of 2 million/year is allocated, and you can create research groups to solve interdisciplinary social issues. You can also have opportunities for joint research with overseas partner organizations or consortium-participating organizations for three months or more and conduct global research related to the student’s research theme. In that case, you can receive support for travel expenses up to 800,000 yen/year. You will be able to show your research to organizations of the SSS Promotion Consortium at the "SSS Interdisciplinary matching workshop" held twice a year where you will have the opportunity to get a joint research partner!
Mentors who are faculty members in a completely different field from your laboratory will be assigned to each SSS student. Regular discussions with mentors will help you re-recognize your research from an objective perspective, which will give you a chance to come up with new ideas. Of course, you can consult with mentors about any other topics, even if they are not about research!
We conducted a questionnaire to SSS students from electrical and electronic engineering, and we would like to show you the following answers!
As mentioned above, the WISE-SSS program is very attractive! The next WISE-SSS admissions will be around December 2021. For details on registration requirements and financial support, please check the website of the WISE-SSS program.
