This dissertation discusses method to reduce acoustic noise in switched reluctance motors. Switched reluctance motors are the alternative to substitute permanent magnet motors in hybrid electric vehicle application because of the absent of rare-earth material. One of the challenge of switched reluctance motors is high acoustic noise. In this dissertation, flattening radial force sum is applied not only in magnetically unsaturated condition, but also in magnetically saturated condition. Flattening radial force sum also applied in switched reluctance motor which has competitive performance with permanent magnet motors employed in leading hybrid electric vehicle. It is also investigated flattening radial force in reduce number of poles switched reluctance motors. It is found that flattening radial force sum is effective to reduce noise in switched reluctance motors.
