Reasons for choosing Science Tokyo

Japan has become almost a second home to me, and I always look forward to returning each year. I chose Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology) because of its outstanding reputation in scientific research and its strong international academic environment. My doctoral studies there shaped my curiosity and passion for becoming both a scientist and a lecturer. Science Tokyo provided excellent research facilities, supportive supervisors, and a collaborative laboratory culture that encouraged independent thinking and innovation. Beyond academics, I appreciated the safe and comfortable living environment for international students. The knowledge, skills, and values I gained during my time there continue to serve as the foundation of my career as a researcher and lecturer today.

My most significant learning experience or memory

One of the most meaningful experiences during my PhD was investigating the role of the placental protein NRK in regulating placental development. Our research successfully elucidated how NRK suppresses placental hyperplasia in mice and explored the molecular evolutionary mechanisms underlying this process. This work resulted in a publication that received the Ohsumi Award from Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Yoshinori Ohsumi at Science Tokyo. Beyond research, a life-changing personal milestone occurred during my doctoral studies, I became pregnant and gave birth while pursuing my PhD. Balancing research and childcare was challenging, but the encouragement from my supervisor and the kindness of my laboratory colleagues made it possible. This experience strengthened my passion for placental biology and motivated me to continue contributing to research that advances maternal and fetal health.

Current activities and career

I am a Junior Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. My responsibilities include teaching molecular pharmacology and biomedical sciences to medical students, as well as mentoring students in research activities. In addition to my teaching duties, I actively develop and conduct research projects. I continue to collaborate with my former PhD supervisor on placental biology research, building upon the work I conducted during my doctoral studies. I am also involved in ethnomedicine research, particularly exploring the scientific basis and pharmacological potential of traditional medicinal plants and natural products for human health.

How my studies at Science Tokyo have contributed to my career

The knowledge and experiences I gained at Science Tokyo have played a significant role in shaping my professional career. My graduate studies provided not only technical expertise in molecular biology and pharmacological research but also a scientific mindset that emphasizes curiosity, critical analysis, and evidence-based thinking. Working in a highly international and research-oriented environment taught me how to design research projects, communicate scientific findings effectively, and collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds. These skills are directly applicable to my current position as a lecturer and researcher at Universitas Gadjah Mada. The training I received continues to influence how I teach students, conduct research, and pursue scientific discoveries.
