The "Transcendental Molecular System" area (Leader: Prof. Tomoaki Matsuura, Earth-Life Science Institute) has been selected as Grant-in-Aid for Transfomative Reseach Area (A) for 2021. Transfomative Reseach Area (A) aims to foster research groups that aim to create new research fields that will lead the world. In 2021, the project was one of the 16 projects adopted in total. This is the only research area in which a Tokyo Tech researcher was selected as the area representative. This is an indication of the high level of research capability in the field of Life Science and Technology at Tokyo Tech.

| Project detail | In recent years, scientific research on the creation of artificial cells by combining biomolecules and other materials has become increasingly active around the world. Professor Matsuura at ELSI will work on establishing a research field that aims to construct molecular systems not only from biomolecules about also combine organic compounds, polymers, and micro- and nano-devices while utilizing computational science to assemble "transcendent molecular systems" that exceed the capabilities of natural cells or possess capabilities that natural cells do not possess. |
