Vision
The Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA) will supplement specialized science
and technology education provided
by Tokyo Tech's six new Schools with education in the liberal arts.
The ILA aims to develop individuals who understand the challenges of 21st century society and have the social skills to recognize their roles in it, the willingness to dig deep down into themselves, the creativity to take action, tackle problems, and achieve goals, and who aspire to build a better future society.
Message from the Dean
With the establishment of Institute of Science Tokyo, the Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA) embarks on a new era, fulfilling its role as a cornerstone of the mission of Science Tokyo to pursue “Advancing sciences" and “Human wellbeing”.
The ILA offers a curriculum spanning a wide range of academic disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, foreign languages, wellness, teacher training, and Japanese studies, and comprehensive core curriculum from undergraduate to doctoral levels. These educational programs are led by distinguished researchers with deep expertise in their respective fields. Through their specialized knowledge and rich experience, students gain access to the frontiers of academic inquiry, cultivating profound insights and broad perspectives.
Our educational goal is to equip each student with a multifaceted perspective, profound cultural literacy, and the ability to learn autonomously and grow continuously. The challenges faced by contemporary society, such as environmental issues, social inequality, multicultural coexistence, and ethical technology application, are growing in complexity and cannot be resolved through technological innovation alone. Addressing these challenges requires intellect and sensitivity grounded in scientific knowledge, as well as a deep sense of empathy. The ILA nurtures these abilities, empowering students to engage with society through interdisciplinary perspectives.
Furthermore, fostering the ability to connect deeply with others through dialogue and respect for diverse opinions and values is a central pillar of our education. Through dialogue-based classes and hands-on activities, students develop advanced communication and collaboration skills, enabling them to engage in constructive discussions and address complex challenges effectively.
We also place great emphasis on cultivating an understanding and practical application of the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ability to collaborate while respecting the positions and cultures of others is key to shaping the future. By providing education that encourages the integration of knowledge from diverse fields and bold engagement with complex issues, we support students in their journey to become leaders of innovation.
