Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering
Graduate Major
Curriculum

A curriculum that develops globally
successful researchers

The Graduate Major in Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering is built around courses that have been grouped into categories and systematically structured so that students can learn according to their level of learning and achievement.

    • Tokyo Tech
    • Other Universities,
      Technical Colleges, etc.
  1. Entrance
    Examination

Applicants must pass an entrance examination to advance from an undergraduate major to a master's program.
  2. Master's Program
    ( 2 Years )*1

    400-Level and 500-Level Courses

Using the specialized knowledge of fields that were acquired in the Undergraduate Program as a foundation, the curriculum allows students to systematically learn common specialized knowledge and techniques required for cutting-edge research and development of life engineering. It is also structured to allow students to gain advanced specialized knowledge and skills by building on the specialized knowledge and skills that were developed in the Undergraduate Program. Furthermore, it is designed to allow students to deepen their expertise and creativity by conducting their own research through the Research Seminars, Master's Thesis Research Planning Theory course, and master's thesis research.

    • Research Seminars and Research-Related Courses
Research seminars and sessions to review and discuss literature are held to support students in their master's thesis research. Through these courses, students develop an ability to plan research that is consistent with the objective. In addition, students are given opportunities to make presentations and report research plans and findings, which foster presentation skills.
Cutting-edge research in the field of life engineering, which integrates life science and technology, applied chemistry, materials, mechanical engineering, and electrical and information engineering, is carried out to acquire advanced specialized knowledge and skills and to complete the master's thesis. Along with this, by preparing presentation materials and by having discussions with researchers in other fields, students develop communication skills necessary to disseminate their thoughts and ideas with an international perspective.
    • Common Specialized Courses
In these courses, students develop basic academic abilities in fields such as human science, medical and health sciences, bioethics, and the environment. Their knowledge of humanities as well as language and communication skills are also developed to help them succeed in a global society. Furthermore, students acquire cross-disciplinary practical knowledge by studying in laboratories of different fields and by drawing up product development plans that bring about life innovation — innovations in life engineering.
    • Mechanical Engineering
Students develop an integrated understanding of knowledge of diverse fields by fusing knowledge they possess of various fields with the profound expertise of mechanical engineering that touches on life engineering that they acquire through these courses.
    • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
In these courses, students deepen their expertise of electrical and electronic engineering related to life engineering. By combining this knowledge with those they have of other fields, individuals who have widespread education of a variety of fields are fostered.
    • Information and Communications Engineering
By deepening their expertise in the field of information and communications that is concerned with life engineering and combining this with their studies of other fields, individuals with comprehensive understanding of knowledge in a wide range of fields are cultivated.
    • Materials Science and Engineering
In-depth understanding of materials science and engineering associated with life engineering is cultivated, and by integrating this knowledge with those of other areas of study students have obtained, individuals with comprehensive knowledge of numerous domains are produced.
    • Chemical Science and Engineering
Individuals with extensive knowledge of many fields are produced by strengthening comprehension of areas in chemical science and engineering that is concerned with life engineering and combining them with the knowledge students have of other fields.
    • Computer Science
Through the courses under this group, students will gain interdisciplinary expertise on computer science and life engineering, which will enable them to develop a unified understanding of a broad range of closely related areas.
    • Life Science
Courses in this category train students to expand their grasp of areas of life science that have connections with life engineering. This is put together with knowledge of other fields students have acquired to foster individuals who have a good understanding of a broad range of disciplines.

    600-Level Courses

Students are introduced to the latest specialized knowledge in the Research Seminars and Doctoral Thesis Planning Theory course . Through these, students also acquire wide-ranging, highly advanced expertise in life engineering and develop a high standard of ethics. Moreover, along with leadership skills and communication skills, individuals cultured to an internationally acceptable standard are developed in the Teaching Methodology course and International Presentations course, and by doing internships and getting training at companies, career building skills are learned. For their doctoral thesis research, students conduct research at the highest level. They develop excellent creativity and enhance their ability to identify and solve problems. These skills will enable them to play a leading role in the international society.

    • Research Seminars and Research-Related Courses
Research seminars and sessions to review and discuss literature are held to support students in their doctoral thesis research. Through these courses, students develop their abilities to establish the objective of their studies and plan out the research. In addition, students are given opportunities to make presentations and report research plans and findings, which foster presentation skills. While on the path to completing their doctoral theses, students carry out cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary research and acquire specialized knowledge and skills at the highest level.
