Tokyo Tech and Cambridge students share latest nanotech advances

Students were offered an excellent opportunity to network and share their research as Tokyo Tech hosted twenty PhD students from the University of Cambridge's Centre for Doctoral Training - Nano Science & Technology (NanoDTC)Outer on September 17, 2019.

Cambridge groups represented during the visit included the Adsorption & Advanced Materials GroupOuter, Bioelectronics LaboratoryOuter, Bio-inspired Photonics GroupOuter, Bio-nano Engineering GroupOuter, Credgington LabOuter, Deschler LabOuter, DiMichele LabOuter, Electron Microscopy GroupOuter, Franze LabOuter, Grey GroupOuter, Hitachi Cambridge LaboratoryOuter, Hofmann GroupOuter, Hybrid Materials GroupOuter, Kar-Narayan LabOuter, NanoManufacturing GroupOuter, Optofluidics GroupOuter, Quantum Sensors GroupOuter, Reisner LabOuter, Thin Film Magnetism GroupOuter, and Echion Technologies CambridgeOuter.

After a brief overview of the Institute at Suzukakedai Campus by Associate Professor Masahiro Takinoue, the NanoDTC scientists toured the Takinoue LabOuter where they heard about Tokyo Tech's latest research on the construction of artificial cells using DNA gels, droplets, and nanoplates. They also visited the lab of Professor Masahiko HaraOuter to learn about current studies in functional molecular interfaces, nanophotonics, and nanoscopic approaches to the chemical origins of life.

In the afternoon, the students split into two groups to present their own nanoscience and technology-focused research through poster sessions. One group accompanied members of the Hara Lab to the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI)Outer on Ookayama Campus, where they were joined by Associate Professor Nobuhiro Hayashi and his lab members in the Department of Life Science and Technology, and students studying under Associate Professor Tetsuo Kodera in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Another group stayed behind to continue their discussions on Suzukakedai Campus with students of the Takinoue Lab and Associate Professor Keiko Waki's lab in the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering.
