Our daily lives are intertwined with information. Our information society is continuously developing at a rapid pace, and the cutting-edge mathematics and computer related sciences at its foundation must keep up. In the Graduate Major in Mathematical and Computing Science, our cutting-edge research in the principles and methods of mathematics and computing, referred to as mathematical science and computing science, allow us to link our information society to the next generation.

In the Graduate Major in Mathematical and Computing Science, courses are provided in mathematics, applied mathematics, and computing. They include formulation of basic theory through mathematics, mathematical modeling of problems with applied mathematics, and information processing skills with computer science. Friendly competition between students studying in each research laboratory across these three course groups generates positive synergistic effects.

TSUMABE is Tokyo Institute of Technology's impressive supercomputer with world class speed and energy saving performance. In the Department of Mathematical and Computing Science, we conduct research using the large scale information infrastructure of the TSUBAME supercomputer not only as a user but also as its designer and operator. As a user, for example, we utilize TSUBAME to solve large-scale mathematical optimization, combinatorial problems, and big data problems. As a designer and operator, we conduct research on algorithms for parallel computing involving several million machines, network analysis based on graph theory, and energy saving based on mathematical models.

Connections often transcend borders in mathematics and computer research. In the Graduate Major in Mathematical and Computing Science, we have an atmosphere where students can easily engage in discussion with the many world class researchers who visit the department for both short and long-term stays. Ground-breaking research subjects and the seeds of new collaborative research are born from easy going, relaxed discussion.

After completion, a wide-array of job opportunities are available in various corporations in the fields of IT, securities, and finance or in academia, including universities and research institutes. Graduates from all three fields of the Graduate Major in Mathematical and Computing Science are able to play an active role in all aspects of the next generation information society, from the basics to applications.
