Professor Hosono receives 2016 Japan Prize, gives commemorative lecture

The Japan Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on April 20 at Tokyo International Forum with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress in attendance. The 2016 laureates, Tokyo Tech's Professor Hideo Hosono and Professor Emeritus Steven D. Tanksley from Cornell University, received certificates of merit and prize medals.

Hosono, professor at the Institute of Innovative Research and director of the Materials Research Center of Element Strategy, was awarded the prize for "creation of unconventional inorganic materials with novel electronic functions based on nano-structure engineering."

Both laureates gave commemorative lectures at Tokyo Tech Front on April 21. During his talk entitled "Element strategy and future materials," Hosono spoke about his research and perspective on materials research.
