The Graduate Major in Materials Science and Engineering curriculum is designed to allow students to learn according to their levels and achievements. Related courses are grouped into categories, enabling students to systematically acquire specialized knowledge.

    Applicants must pass an entrance examination to advance from an undergraduate major to a master's program.
  2. Master's Program

    400-Level and 500-Level Courses

    Building on the fundamental knowledge of materials science and materials engineering acquired in the Undergraduate Program, in the Master's Program, topics related to the composition and physical properties of metals, organic, and inorganic materials that are more advanced and the cutting-edge technologies that are used in these areas are studied systematically. Furthermore, students individually conduct surveys, write research proposals, carry out research, and share findings for the Research Seminars, Research-Related Courses, and master's thesis research. This enables students to strengthen their expertise as well as develop higher levels of creativity, enhance their powers of expression, and improve their ability to grasp the nature of research problems and propose ways of solving them.

    • Metals
      Study more advanced topics in metal physics, metal chemistry, and metal materials science that systematically build on what was learned in the basic core courses of the Undergraduate Program.
    • Organic Materials
      Study Major Courses, covering the composition, structure, physical properties, and functions of materials, that systematically build on what was learned in the organic materials Core Courses of the Undergraduate Program.
    • Inorganic Materials
      Deepen specialized knowledge of structural chemistry, properties of matter, reaction chemistry, and process chemistry, by studying Major Courses that build on what was learned in the inorganic materials Core Courses of the Undergraduate Program.
    • Research Courses
      Using the knowledge acquired in the Major Courses, students make proposals and plan for their master's thesis research before carrying out research that is congruent with their research theme. In addition, sessions where students present their findings to and engage in discussions with faculty members and fellow students are held on a regular basis.
    • Research Seminars
      Students deepen their understanding of existing research by studying papers that are closely related to their master's thesis research topic, and make use of this knowledge in their master's thesis research.

    Using the broad knowledge and skills of materials science and materials engineering acquired in the Master's Program as a foundation, in the Doctoral Program, students develop practical skills to identify real-world problems on their own and conduct research on these issues. They are also cultivated to understand and systematize trends in research and development from a materials science standpoint as well as to make new, creative proposals while having the integrity to give back to society through the fruits of their research. Therefore, the curriculum is designed to have greater flexibility that allows students to plan their studies by themselves and take courses that satisfy these plans. The curriculum consists of Major Courses through which students can develop skills to make creative research proposals and enhance their powers of expression, Research Seminars through which students can develop their ability to conduct research and systematize research, and Career Development Courses through which they can recognize how and where their research touches society.

      Students deepen their understanding of existing research by studying papers that are closely related to their doctoral thesis research topic, and make use of this knowledge in their doctoral thesis research.
    • Graduate Major Courses
      Students not only acquire the highest-level of expertise in materials, but also learn the process of defining a research topic and solving it through our program that puts emphasis on hands-on experience.
    • Humanities and Social Science Courses
      By taking Student Production Courses and Advanced Liberal Arts Courses, students get a liberal arts education that is fitting for a materials professional.
